The Scripps Photobiology Group has been hosting a series on the commercialization of algae, with a focus on the possible production of biofuels from algae.

 

The puropse of this forum is to exchange information and spur collaborative conversation about the role that microalgae could play in shaping our energy future, and in developing ways to investigate and utilize the primary production of marine and freshwater systems to produce beneficial energy products.

 

Topics have included profiles of existing systems for the large-scale production of microalgae, the focus of major energy company interests in this field, prospects and estimates for energy production, particularly biodiesel, and academic investigations into limiting factors such as strain selection, photobioreactor design, and ecological and contamination issues.
